Allow me to take you away from the action filled stimulus of tokusatsu to put on your
overthinkingit caps for just a moment.
So recently a discussion came up on the forum about what is and what isn't offensive. I think it'd be interesting to have an open discussion of the matter.
From a personal standpoint, I think the
Penny Arcade guys hit the nail on the head with this
campaign. The spirit of the matter is worth championing. Y'know, "don't be assholes to people who are different". But the naivete of the way the message is being done is off putting. Like the stupid flash thing in the corner that tells people not to call each other "dicks" or "geeks". You're basically overshooting the goal and trying to purify humans into things that they are not meant to be.
From a #TV-Nihon standpoint, we don't censor our translations nor do we censor non-ignorant opinions on the forums. We don't overcompensate for political correctness and there are times when I outright break character to make an ironic point. Like the issue of swear words in our subs has been a battle fought since the very existence of the group.
My basic opinion is that people don't have the right to be offended if no offense was meant. What people should be disgusted with is ignorant thinking or behavior. Like if little kids walk by and they're calling each other "gay" and "noobs", they're probably not homophobes, but they still sound ignorant, right?
It's like the difference between manners and courtesy. One is about following rules set by society that you may or may not agree with. The other is about acting appropriately within a certain context to not be a dick.
