Blue fruit, the origins of Ao

So something that’s often mistranslated is Aoi 青い/蒼い. Normally it just means “blue”. But when used to talk about traffic lights, fruit, and grass, it means “green”.

If you look up the kanji in a Chinese dictionary, it’ll mostly say “green” (with some blue?). So it’s easy to think, “Oh, Japanese is derived from Chinese characters, this is probably some lost in translation thing.”

But maybe it’s symptomatic of something bigger than that? So I recently listened to the Radiolab podcast about colorshttp://www.radiolab.org/story/211119-colors/

And there was a whole section devoted to the color bluehttp://www.radiolab.org/story/211213-sky-isnt-blue/
To summarize, Homer from the Odyssey and stuff like that never used the word (or rarely did?). The same could be said about many of his contemporaries. Apparently, in human language, the first colors always tend to be black, white, then red… and blue almost always ended up being the last word form. Why? Were ancient people just colorblind? One theory they proposed was that blue didn’t occur in nature very often. Or that it was a difficult color for humans to make.

But what about the sky, right? So they did this test on some tribe somewhere that didn’t have the word for “blue” in their language. They were tested for color blindness, then shown some green colors and a blue color, and they couldn’t spot the blue. One guy asked his kid what color the sky was, and she’d say stuff like “white”, eventually sorta saying “blue” but only after a few months.

Gaim last HD720 batch released

It's seeded, go get it!

Ultraman Nexus pulled

Since it's been licensed we've pulled our Nexus torrents.

Jyuohger (and other) splashes?

Last year, we didn't get many splashes for *cough* Ninninger after a while. I'm hoping the new series will do a better job at sparking people's imaginations?

You can submit them to this thread. Resolution size should be 1920x1080 or 1280x720.

As always, we can use splashes for Ghost, the upcoming Sentai versus, Ninnin returns, etc. We'll probably need HD splashes for the Sentai movies coming out on Blu-ray in March. As always, you can check this page for a list of upcoming releases.

Drive Batch 2 seeded now

The torrents are seeded now. If you were waiting, now's a good time to hop on.

Drive Batch 2 released

Includes episodes 23-36, Sangou, Yongou, and Time MV. This batch also includes Blu-ray versions of the Junction segments. Sorry, forgot the Who's that Guy MV, so that'll be in batch 3.

Ninninger 46 v2 released already!

Looks like the audio was messed up. Should be good now with a v2. Sorry for that, folks!

Happy Twin Tails Day!

Any programmer types out there?

Right now, our main series page and episode pages draw upon a single file for various pieces of data like date, title, writer, director, etc. So each variable gets a separate call to the data file, which I find wasteful.

What I'm wondering is:
1) Is there a data structure that can fit multiple components like date, title, etc.? It'd be nice if we only had to draw out one data set per episode.
2) Can that data set be stored temporarily for a page and be accessed multiple times to fill in the various fields?

My Neighbor Seki-kun

I've been really enjoying the manga My Neighbor Seki-kun. It's about a boy who goofs off in class and gets his neighbor in trouble for watching him. I feel some affinity towards Seki. I picked up volume 1 and actually laughed out loud a few times.

In volume 5, Seki plays mini-pool with some marbles and there's a Kamen Rider theme.
