Our late donation drive

So our usual disclaimer, fansubbing is a hobby for our group. We don't do it for profit and most of us have jobs and other stuff going on. But if you don't mind a little wait and enjoy our style, we'd love it if you can help offset some of the costs of this hobby

Our goal this time is $662:

  • 135 for a seedbox
  • 240 for the server
  • 247 for source material
  • 93 for computer replacement parts
  • -52 from donations throughout the year

Anyway, I'll leave this up for a week. If we make it, we make it. Otherwise it's no big deal. You can donate from our Paypal link, but e-mail if you want to pay using a different method and I can see if I can arrange something. Thank you for reading!

No Toei files here

Just a reminder that because of the copyright problems with Toei, we're not hosting any Toei files on this site anymore. If you look around, you can probably find that other people have archived it in other places.

Little bit of forum clean-up (And updates?)

On a personal note, I'm part-time now! Hopefully more time to work on subs?

Forumwise, Super Heroine Cooking and Giga Tokusatsu have their own forums now. Radical! Sadly, it looks like episode 12 will be the last of Heroine Cooking. New Giga series, Dinnovator, has its opening out now. It looks alright!

Para Hero GandD is all translated in QC (all three of them!)

What else am I working on? Hmmm...

Toku Music Project

Our forum member Ashki  is looking for some help with a toku CD project:

I'm looking for other enthusiasts to join me in my quest to create the definitive tokusatsu music archive. If you:

* have albums and can provide high quality scans of the discs and media, and/or provide fresh rips of the tracks (FLAC or 320kbps, I can easily convert the former while editing)
* know of good resources that have high quality rips or have knowledge about rare releases or variants

Cancellation of Saber/Zenkaiger

It brings me no joy to announce that after discussing the situation with my staff, we will no longer be continuing work on either Saber or Zenkaiger. Not even softsubs. Personally, I couldn't continue work on either series if it means worrying that it would paint a target on our members backs. I don't want to mess with people's livelihoods or be responsible for being the one that got them in legal trouble.

So what does this mean for our group? We'll continue subbing as usual, but with series that aren't as contentious. If you like the stuff we sub in general, hopefully we pick stuff you'd also enjoy. Heck, we might even sub future KR or Sentai stuff and release it in some cheeky sneaky fashion in the future. Just not Saber or Zenkaiger for now.

What we will continue to do:

  • Sub the commercials
  • Create discussion threads
  • Update our wikis for the series

We don't want to leave you high and dry, so we'll be plugging other fansub groups that are working on Saber and Zenkaiger. So far, I know that Over-Time is okay with being plugged, I think they're doing Zenkaiger. If your group is comfortable with being plugged here, please let us know. (Only contact me if you're a member of said group, for obvious reasons I want to make sure they want to be plugged on our site.) Also, if you're an international translator for Saber/Zenkaiger, lemme know and I'll happily plug you too.

Thank you to the fans of both series for giving us their support all these years. I hope you understand the situation that we're in and what lead us to the decision that we made. It's just not worth it to me if it lands a friend in prison or kicked out of Japan or something. Hopefully you'll check back and we'll be working on something that will delight you just as much.

Shirakura speaks

Someone pointed this out to me:

https://www.nihonhero.com/post/shinchiro-shirakura-speaks-up-on-the-fans...

“It was like ‘If the pheasant didn't ring, then it wouldn't have been hit’”

Kind of makes you wonder who the pheasant is in this scenario. The fans, the fansubbers, or Toei itself.

Redid the gender field

I was told the current character limit was too limited, so I had to redo it to add a longer length. Sorry, but you'll have to redo it

takenoko blabs about stuff

Hi all,

First, an apology for the lateness of this reply. I know a lot of you have questions about the future of this group. It doesn't help that I also feel overwhelmed and have been avoiding tough conversations and decisoins.

Please be cool with Toei. They're the makers of these shows that we're fans of. It's perfectly in their right to ask us to stop. All we do is put funny moving subtitles on top of their creations. We don't want people sending death threats or insults or doing anything in our name that would make us or the fandom look bad.

I've responded to their e-mail informing them that we've removed all links to their files from our website. You won't find any files here anymore, sorry. This is our hobby and we love it, but it'd be a terrible blow to us if any of us were hit with legal problems because of this. We can't make fansubs if it's not safe to do so. In my e-mail response, I told them I respected their work, took their letter seriously, and also cheekily asked if we could work for them legally (A guy can dream right?)

But that doesn't mean we're dead either. We're still a fansite and we'll still have discussions about Toei shows and movies.

Personally, I still want to translate these shows. I think that maybe we can do the translations and just release the soft subs? You'll have to buy the Blu-rays or grab the raws from somewhere else like Tokyo Toshokan or Nyaa, but what other people post isn't my responsibility. This is just to keep our own hands clean.

I still want to post to the super thread at some point, but at 174 replies, it might take me a while to do so. So check back there in a bit, I might have replied or answered a question you posted!

People have been asking what they can do to help us. I don't really know, besides staying cool fans. It's been really heartwarming receiving all the e-mails and posts and visits to our discord server and meeting with y'all. There's definitely been times when it's felt like our time in the sun has passed and it's time to move on, but it's cool to know that there's people out there that still like us.

And on a personal note, this has been some week for me. My mom had heart problems Monday morning so they took her in an ambulance to the hospital. The next day, she was in surgery to have a pacemaker installed. Getting a letter from Toei that threatened my hobby and identity wasn't really what I needed to end the week. On top of that, my Switch broke lol. It's been stressful, but it's been fun responding to your e-mails and goofing with you all on Discord and stuff.

For now, I'm still waiting for a response from Toei before making any major decisions. Till then, hang out. Let's talk toku, games, and whatever old and new. Our biggest strength is our bond as a community. Thusly, I'm going to plug the members-only lounge again in case people from different locals wanted to meet or just talk with people who are close by. There's also the self-introduction thread that has an age poll. Edit: The Otaku room is also a good thread.

Finally, thanks to the different groups for responding to me. Like KRDL or people who work as lawyers or different toku blogs like Himitsusentaiblog or people from Ov-erti Me or others that I'm overlooking. Also, I'd like to anonymously post some of the letters I've received since I think they're worth sharing at some point.

Edit: I can't stop watching this

Gender text field added to Forum Profiles

Hi all!

Real quick thing today. Deleted the previous gender fields and just changed it into a text field so that you can write in whatever fits you best.

You can change it by doing the following:

Click the person icon in the upper right

Click User Control Panel

Select the Profile Tab

Under the field Gender, write in whatever makes you most feel comfortable

Welcome to #TV-Nihon Zero-Two

Since we no longer host illegal files on this site, as part of our next phase, we're going to be focused on fostering the fan community. First, the forums.

We have a fanfics forum - Why not take a moment and stop by and read some? Just be nice

Members-only lounge - Remember when we made maps to figure out where our fans are? We also attempted to set up meet-ups between fans. I know the lockdown has a lot of us feeling lonely. If you want to try meeting a fellow fan, feel free to use our forums to do so. Just remember to use good sense and caution when meeting any stranger.

Also, we still have many subtitled works that aren't owned by Toei. Maybe use this time as an opportunity to check them out?

Appreciation for the fans

Newswise, nothing to report. I sent a reply to the e-mail and will see how it goes from there.

Meanwhile, I just wanted to express my appreciation for the fans who've enjoyed our work. I don't know what our future will look like tomorrow or the next day, but we certainly couldn't have made it 18+ years without your interest, zeal, support, friendship, free labor, I mean help, etc.

Like I commonly say, we're not a for-profit group. Everyone here is a volunteer and we all have full-time or part-time jobs on the side to support ourselves in addition to working on these subs. We like this work and it's our hobby, so if we can't sub Toei shows anymore, we'll probably find something else to work on. Hopefully some of you will follow us with those projects in the future. Realistically, a lot of you won't, but I hope you all have good lives and that our paths cross again if this has to be the end.

Why the torrents are gone for Sentai and Kamen Rider

I'm sure you have a lot of questions. So do we.

Navigating the website

Downloads

It's only through torrents right now. I recommend using a seedbox for torrents. Most clients will let you subscribe to the RSS feed to let you download it as soon as there's a release (There's probably ways to filter it if you want only certain torrents).

But if you have a Dropbox, send me an e-mail or forum PM and I'll add you to our released folder. If you have Dropbox set up on your computer to sync automatically, the files will download as soon as they're added.

Wiki stuff

In the episode article page there'll be a link to the forum discussion thread in the Navigation box (as well as info on who the writer and director are for the episode). There's list of guest actors, trivia, and what commercials are included. At the bottom there's a link to the Japanese caption transcript if you want to double check our work. After about a week we added the average reaction to the viewer poll in the discussion thread to the Nav box.

On the series page, at the bottom you can see a list of files released, in case you're trying to figure out what you're missing from your #TV-Nihon fansub collection.

There's also the disc release article in case you're wondering when a certain release will come out. I'm also trying to be good about having an article link to whatever upcoming projects there are. Hopefully it'll cut down on the number of people asking "Are you going to release this?" Even though we all know that question is secretly "When are you going to release this?"

Forum Thread

We have episode discussion threads for every release we do. There's a poll at the top which gets the average result posted in the following week thread. It's not super scientific, but it's a fun temperature test of how the series is going. Link to episode wiki in thread itself, link to series wiki at the top of the forum.

For Zenkaiger in particular, it'd be fun if we could see how many Sentai references we can spot!

LOL, some of the lies people tell are so lame

[05:45] <private> I'm working on a project for the best release of season zero.  I have VHS transfers for 12-27 (lossless transfers, donated to me by someone.)  I plan to use 1-15 subs from GX_ST, but seeing as your release is the only one that covered 16 onwards I wanted to ask if you care if I transcribe and softsub 16-27.  I heard a rumor saying that I would get death threats if I did
[05:46] <private> I don't want scripts or anything like that.
[05:46] <&Lunagel> no that's cool, go for it
[05:46] <private> Thanks man
[05:47] <&Lunagel> also: death threats? really? ;/

A) We don't send death threats. It's pretty shocking what kind of lies people will tell to make our group look bad.

B) Do I need to say this? If you're a fan, don't send death threats on our behalf. That's super uncool in so many ways.

Imagine coming home from work for lunch and finding out others are saying your group is sending death threats to people. So surreal XD

Donation goal met!

We met our server donation goal last night! Thank you to everyone who donated! We really wouldn't be anywhere without community involvement.

That said, we're just going to leave the donate button up year round now, in case people want to leave tips. Donations receied during these times will be used to cover material costs (buying DVDs, paying for streaming services, etc.). So no obligation to donate from here on, just leave a tip if you like what we're doing. Thanks everyone!

Any video encoder techy guys around?

I need to capture some footage from a VCR player and a Laser Disc player, does anyone have good advice for how to do that?

I'm currently working with someone to redo our Toei Yu-Gi-Oh anime subs, but this tech can be used for other stuff too

Zero-One viewing party tonight!

So we're teaming up with Tokusatsu TV on Twitch. They'll be streaming our episodes and hosting our viewing parties. They also have a Discord so if you want to download the video and just watch it in sync with everyone, you have that option too.

We have reached out to Takenoko and are pleased to help host the viewing parties currently. We will strive to bring something great to the table as far as public awareness for the genre and to help those here, as well as newcomers, connect on an even greater level. We want to help spread the word about an amazing group of people that we have held in high regard for years and to assist in nurturing and growing their audience to the best of our abilities for the foreseeable future.

To that end, we will be altering our onscreen transitions in-between episodes to include the TV-Nihon name as a wonderful source of Japanese media. We will also be altering our channel description (Site/Discord links; etc) and encourage many viewers and fans to go check TV-Nihon out.

Everyone here hopes you will have just as much fun watching together as we've had making all of this possible and, from all of us at TokusatsuTV, "If you Kamen, They will Ride!"
Link to the channel: https://www.twitch.tv/tokusatsutv
Link to our discord: https://discord.gg/ZymkRv9

Starts at 6 PM Pacific!

Tracker update

Hi, if you're using our RSS feeds, you might need to add an s to the http sinc ethey're not on https.

If it's not working for you, let me know, but otherwise I think it should be fine with the updated url.

Thread

Edit: From the forum in case other people have the same issue:

"Nope, making the URL https didn't work, but I found the problem. My client is set up to use a Socks5 proxy (for torrent privacy in general), and apparently https feeds can't be downloaded over a proxy. The only solution I found is to switch to a different client that only uses the proxy for the actual torrents, not the rss feeds."

Viewing party for next Zero-One release?

I want to have a viewing party for the next Zero-One release. Let's start with something simple like meeting on IRC and just doing a countdown. If it's popular maybe we can research one of those other programs (Unless someone wants to do that for me)

So for the next Zero-One release, viewing party! Details:

Time: 6 PM Pacific time same day of release. So if it releases before 6 PM on Tuesday, we watch it that 6 PM. If it's after, then we watch it on Wednesday at 6 PM.

Place: IRC web client: http://cgiirc.synirc.net/
Channel: #tv-nihonwatchers

Again, if someone wants to come up with a better system and handle it for me, I'll gladly step aside and we'll try their plan.

Watch parties?

Would people be interested if we set up meeting time to watch a release?

Like maybe 10 PM Eastern, 7 PM Pacific on the day of a release people can meet up and watch the episode release together? It'd just be an excuse to hang out and experience a thing together with other people

We can probably set it up on discord or whatever
