Kamen Rider Agito 04 released

Akiyama Rina

Oh yeah, a young Akiyama Rina is in this show too. At this point, you guys probably know her better as Naomi, the train lady from Den-O. Sort of like how younglings are more familiar with the Star Wars prequels instead of the originals. It makes me so mad!!!

A reassurance... hmm... sorta

Kitaaa

So a little bird tells me that there's some rumblings over "space kitaaa" being left untranslated, or something.

The short response: It's just a promo, have a sense of humor. We may change it, we may not.

The long response: Normally when we leave stuff in Japanese, there's a sort of reasoning for why it's done that way. Either it's to keep in line with how we do things stylistically, or it works better to fit the Japanese nature of the show, or it's a joke that wouldn't work otherwise, etc.

When I woke up at the fine hour of 2 PM on Sunday, the Fourze promo was for the most part already done. Luna originally had that line as "Space, here I come!" which would have been perfectly fine. I wanted to use "Space is awesome!" since kita is the past tense of "kuru/to come", but it's also used as a generic sort of expression of elation, as many of you have seen in Densha Otoko.

So while talking with Magenta, I guess Luna decided to change the translation since she heard it was the tagline for the show. She asked me what I thought the new line should be, and I jokingly replied "Space kitaaa!" I mean, I just woke up super late and I had stuff to do, I'm not in super translation mode. And to my surprise, she liked it.

And this is where I defend that decision. When it comes to meaning, context is everything. In a show like Densha Otoko, where it's very much about Japanese culture and its slang, keeping kitaaa was very much fitting for the show. In a 15/30 second promo, there's really no telling what's going on when that line is said. I didn't think the guy saying it was in space, Luna did, etc. And while any number of translations could have gone in there, "space kitaaa" was a nice throwback to Japanese culture as it presents itself in these shows.

The translation will probably change when we find out more about what's going on in the scene. But... if kitaaa really fits and there's a good reason to keep it... or if people in general just like the way it sounds, sure, we might just keep it this way. Again, just a promo.

Finally, this was clearly all Mag's fault. Saboteur!

Long thread is long

Heh heh heh

Agito 02 released

Gokai will be a bit delayed this week, so have some more Agito.

So what's the deal with Agito and Kuuga? Why do they look so similar? Why do they keep referring to terms from Kuuga?

I think Decade explained this best. The story of Agito takes place in a world which seems very similar to Kuuga's world, but is actually completely independent. While they use some terms that are very Kuugaish, you'll note that they never mention Kuuga or Grongi. In fact, if you pay attention to the dates, there is no way that Agito and Kuuga can coexist, because their timelines wouldn't match up.

The explanation that I hear for this is because they wanted to do more Kuuga, so Agito started off as a pseudo-sequel. But beyond the first few episodes, you'll note that they never really mention anything Kuuga related again.

Mirai Sentai TimeRanger 03 released

Man, that picture looks familiar to me somehow.

So the first new TimeRanger in years has been released.

From here on zeldAIS will be taking over for the translation. Also, the splash was made by Lunagel, who was humble enough to not credit herself in the pic. I hope you enjoy the little easter egg in the release as well.

It's the Internet, people

Rainbows and love and kisses
So over the past, let's say week, we've been getting weird visits from people who come to our channel to check our group out to check out our people. I think any reasonable person would go, "That's weird..." right?

I mean, I can understand it if people don't like the way we translate certain things or don't like the way we encode our videos. Those guys are probably just not our target audience. Which is fine, right? There's really no real way to please everyone. But the folks who have been coming have been acting like they were visiting a den of the insane to see if one of us would lurch at them and snap at their nose.

As far as our fansubber to public relation goes, I see it as, "We put out Japanese shows with subtitles, you guys download and watch them." And that's kind of it. Regardless of who compose of our staff, we're all pretty much dedicated to doing a pretty good job at that. Regarding who are staff our and what our personalities are like, I don't know what people are saying about us, but if it's something that questions our morals or our character, I just don't see it as being true? How well does the person who you're listening to know us anyway?

It's great if guys come in, chat with us for a bit, see that we're just regular dudes and dudettes just like any other people, but I'm concerned that there are people who take what's being said at face value and just assuming it to be true.

Not to sound cynical or anything, but aren't there people out there who would benefit from libeling us, thus pushing people toward their friend's sites or whatever? You just have to look at your source material and think about things like "How does what they're saying benefit them?" "What biases are inherit in their opinion?" "How true does the information sound? Does it sound like he's had any real interaction with the staff?" "Does this really matter for my toku/anime watching experience?" and of course "Is this guy I'm listening to an asshole, insane, a jerk, an Internet troll, a rumor monger, or something of the like and should I really care what he's saying?"

Basically: We put out fansubs. If you like it, great. If you don't, that's fine too. And we're just regular people and fans of these shows just like you guys are. It should be no surprise that not everything you hear on the Internet is true.
